Guy, this is an early version and is indeed a 2.5G batch. I have since refined the recipe and posted a partial mash version on hopville http://hopville.com/recipe/142884/special-best-premium-bitter-recipes/flowers-original-clone.

You can always replace the base malt with some DME. This last revision of the recipe is my favorite and I doubt I will alter much

Jonny, it was a fit of nostalgia that got be back into brewing, especially the British Ales. Flowers was one of my dads favorites and I made this batch for his Birthday. If you do try the brew let me know what you think.

In a fit of nostalgia, I googled Flowers original, not having drunk it for probably ten years, but having formerly put away a moderate number of pints of it a week when it was my favourite beer as a west midlands resident, and wound up here. It's a tragic, but all too familiar tale, as you say. The City Road Inn in Manchester used to pull a great pint of Flowers' too, and I used to be able to find their IPA in cans fairly readily anywhere between Birmingham and Manchester too. I doubt I'll be turning into a home brewer of Flowers' any time soon, but i've copied down the recipe just in case nostalgia gets the better of me! Great site, by the way!

[...] Flowers Original Ale clone (today) – my first brew of 2010 and first attempt at the classic Flowers recipe. Colour and aroma are on the money and flavour is coming together and tastes just like a Flowers, already crystal clear as well. Here’s hoping the carbonation works. Used Cooper carb drops. [...]
